An endoscopy is a diagnostic test used to assess the internal organs of the digestive system. Let's further discuss the differences between endoscopy in children and adults.

An endoscopy is a procedure that uses a very small, tube-like instrument that can be inserted into the body, extending into the digestive tract to be examined. The end of the endoscope has a light source and a camera that can assess the condition of the internal organs.

Typically, an endoscope can also be connected to a monitor so that the results can be viewed directly. An endoscope can examine various organs of the digestive system, including the stomach, duodenum, colon, bile duct, and pancreas. In addition to the digestive system, an endoscope can also be used to examine joints and the bladder.

Endoscopy Preparation in Children

Similar to endoscopy in adults, endoscopy in children also requires various pre-procedure preparations. The doctor will conduct a medical interview, physical examination, and initial supporting tests. Based on the attending physician's judgment, he or she will determine whether further supporting tests, such as an endoscopy, are necessary. The type of endoscopy also depends on the patient's symptoms and the location of the examination. Gastroscopy is a procedure for examining the stomach, while colonoscopy is a procedure for examining the large intestine.

Before the procedure, the child will be asked to fast to prevent aspiration, which is the entry of food into the respiratory tract, which can cause respiratory failure. Furthermore, fasting is important for obtaining clearer endoscopy results. Before a gastroscopy, the child will be asked to fast for approximately 6-8 hours. For a colonoscopy, the child will also be advised to consume a low-fiber diet for several days beforehand. Furthermore, the child will be given a laxative and only allowed to consume clear liquids before the procedure.

Differences between Endoscopy in Children and Adults

The difference between endoscopy procedures in children and adults lies in the size of the instrument used. In children, a smaller size is used, tailored to their needs. Children's digestive organs tend to be smaller and more sensitive. Endoscopy procedures in adults usually rarely require anesthesia due to their more stable emotional state and ability to control themselves. However, for endoscopy procedures in children, sedation plays a crucial role. General anesthesia is required before an endoscopy in children to keep the child calm during the procedure and minimize the risk of side effects or complications that may occur after the procedure.

Even if they don't fully understand the procedures to be performed, it's important to explain what will be done to their child using language they can easily understand. This can help build their confidence by providing direct involvement. Furthermore, emotional support is crucial, both from the medical team and from family members, to help them feel more at ease.

In adults, endoscopy can usually be performed without hospitalization or simply in day care. However, in children, hospitalization is essential for closer and more intensive post-procedure monitoring, given their more sensitive digestive systems and increased risk of side effects and complications.

Regarding the length of hospitalization required after an endoscopy, this is greatly influenced by the patient's condition, the underlying cause, and the post-procedure assessment. The doctor will use these factors as considerations. The child will also be advised to have a post-endoscopy follow-up for further evaluation. Written by Dr. Valda Garcia.
